245/45R20 103W explained: what each number and letter on your tyre means, and where to find your size.
Every tyre has its size moulded on the sidewall. Take this example:
| 245 | Width of the tyre in millimetres |
|---|---|
| 45 | Profile: the sidewall height is 45% of the width |
| R | Radial construction (almost every car tyre today) |
| 20 | Rim size: fits a 20-inch wheel |
| 103 | Load index: each tyre can carry up to 875 kg |
| W | Speed rating: up to 270 km/h |
Where to find your size
- On the sidewall of the tyres on your car now
- On the sticker inside the driver's door frame or the fuel flap
- In your car's handbook
Width, profile and rim must match
Fit the size your car maker lists for your vehicle. A different size can change the speedometer reading and the handling, and may not fit the wheel or the wheel arch.
Load index and speed rating
Never fit a tyre with a lower load index or speed rating than the car maker asks for. A higher rating is fine.
| Speed rating | Top speed |
|---|---|
| H | 210 km/h |
| V | 240 km/h |
| W | 270 km/h |
| Y | 300 km/h |
